Fulda Cathedral – Hesse’s most important baroque church Fulda Cathedral – the Dom St. Salvator – is not just the most well-known landmark in the baroque town, it is also the most important baroque church in Hesse. When the Imperial Abbey of Fulda became a prince-bishopric back in 1752, the town’s church became a cathedral and episcopal church. Prior to this, it had served as the minster and church for Fulda Abbey, founded back in 744 on the orders of Saint Boniface. The saint’s remains were entombed in the western crypt of the minster in line with his wishes. His tomb remains a popular pilgrimage site and is still visited by pilgrims and tourists from near and far. The original minster soon had to give way to a considerably larger replacement: the Ratgar Basilica, which stood as the largest church building north of the Alps until the 11th century. Johann Dientzenhofer’s magnificent construction Prince-Abbot Adalbert von Schleifras commissioned a new building to take the place of the Ratgar Basilica – the cathedral that we see today. Between 1704 and 1712, Johann Dientzenhofer built the new church in the Italian baroque style, incorporating key elements belonging to its predecessor, including the two tall towers. Like the two churches that existed before it, Fulda Cathedral is consecrated to the “Saviour of the World”. The white interior takes inspiration from some elements of St Peter’s Basilica and the Basilica of St John Lateran in Rome, and follows the architectural style of the first half of the 17th century. The Assumption of Mary and the Holy Trinity are depicted above the baroque high altar. Besides the Boniface altar in the western crypt, a magnificent pulpit, ornate side altars, elaborately designed tombs and the impressive dome and spandrels depicting the four Evangelists will all capture the eye of visitors. Concerts at the Cathedral The Cathedral’s organ has 70 (72) registers, split across four manuals and pedals. Original pipes from the organ built in 1876/77 by the Sauer company still feature in the current organ. Regular organ concerts are held in the cathedral under the artistic direction of Prof. Hans-Jürgen Kaiser. Organ recitals Regular ecclesiastical organ recitals on Saturdays: 12.05 to 12.35pm in May, June, September, October and December. Please note that, due to the organ recitals, the Cathedral is closed to visitors between 11.30am and midday and is only open to those attending the organ recitals from midday. Tickets €5, concessions €4. Pre-booking not required but groups are advised to pre-book if possible. International Summer Organ Festival During July and August, organ concerts featuring internationally renowned guests take place on four Sundays between the hours of 4.30 and 5.30pm. These one-hour concerts feature a wide range of virtuoso organ music from different periods and regions. Tickets €10, concessions €7. Der Dom St. Salvator – Hessens bedeutendste Barockkirche Der Fuldaer Dom St. Salvator ist nicht nur das berühmteste Wahrzeichen der Barockstadt, er ist auch die bedeutendste Barockkirche Hessens. Seit der Erhebung der Fürstabtei Fuldas zum Fürstbistum im Jahre 1752 ist das Gotteshaus Kathedrale und damit Bischofskirche. Zuvor war es Kloster- beziehungsweise Stiftskirche des 744 im Auftrag des Heiligen Bonifatius gegründeten Klosters Fulda. Seine Gebeine wurden auf den Wunsch des Heiligen hin in der Westkrypta der Klosterkirche bestattet. Bis heute ist sein Grab Ziel für Wallfahrerinnen und Wallfahrer sowie Touristen aus nah und fern. Früh musste die erste Klosterkirche einem erheblich größeren Nachfolgebau weichen: der Ratgar-Basilika, die bis ins 11. Jahrhundert als größter Kirchenbau nördlich der Alpen galt. Prachtbau von Johann Dientzenhofer Fürstabt Adalbert von Schleiffras ließ die Ratgar-Basilika durch die Hohe Stiftskirche – den heutigen Dom – ersetzen. Johann Dientzenhofer erbaute zwischen 1704 und 1712 die neue Kirche im Stil des italienischen Barock und übernahm dabei wesentliche Elemente des Vorgängerbaus, darunter die beiden hohen Türme. Wie die beiden Vorgängerkirchen ist auch der Dom St. Salvator dem Erlöser der Welt geweiht. Der weiß gehaltene Innenraum greift Elemente von St. Peter und der Lateranbasilika in Rom auf und bedient sich der Formensprache der ersten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts. Über dem barocken Hochaltar sind die Himmelfahrt Mariens und die Dreifaltigkeit dargestellt. Eine prächtige Kanzel, kunstvolle Nebenaltäre und aufwändig gestaltete Grabmäler sowie die eindrucksvolle Vierungskuppel mit den Evangelisten bannen den Blick des Betrachters ebenso wie der Bonifatius-Altar in der Westkrypta. Konzerte im Dom Die Orgel des Doms hat 70 (72) Register, verteilt auf vier Manualwerke, und Pedal. Grundlage der Disposition waren Pfeifenbestände, die noch aus der 1876/77 von der Firma Sauer gefertigten Orgel vorhanden waren. Im Dom kannst du dir regelmäßig Orgelkonzerte unter künstlerischer Leitung von Prof. Hans-Jürgen Kaiser anhören. Orgelmatineen Regelmäßige geistliche Orgelmatineen immer samstags: 12.05 bis 12.35 Uhr im Mai, Juni, September, Oktober und Dezember. Bitte beachte, dass der Dom aufgrund der Orgelmatineen von 11.30 bis 12.00 Uhr geschlossen wird und ab 12.00 Uhr nur für die Besucherinnen und Besucher der Orgelkonzerte zugänglich ist.
