About: SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT

Für ihre Blockbuster-Ausstellungen ist die Schirn weltweit bekannt; sie locken Hunderttausende nach Frankfurt. Immer neue Schauen stellt die Kunsthalle zusammen, die sich entweder auf einzelne Künstler*innen konzentrieren oder gerne auch mal das Oeuvre einer bestimmten Zeit oder Kunstrichtung zeigen – sei es die Kunst, die in Paris um 1900 entstand, oder etwa das Werk der Impressionistinnen. Genau das war das Ziel, als die Schirn 1986 mitten in der Frankfurter Innenstadt, am Römer, eröffnet wurde: Große Ausstellungen internationaler Häuser nach Frankfurt zu holen. 40 Jahre nach Gründung wird nun das Haupthaus saniert – und Bockenheim zum neuen Kunst-Hotspot der Stadt. Mit dem Bau der ehemaligen Dondorf Druckerei hat die Schirn ein Interimsquartier bezogen, das ihren Schauen eine zusätzliche Dosis Industrie-Charme verleiht. Der Umzug zurück an den Römer ist für 2027 geplant. Übrigens: Eine eigene Sammlung hat die Schirn nicht, jede Ausstellung kommt entweder von Häusern wie dem Pariser Centre Pompidou, der Londoner Tate Gallery, dem New Yorker Museum of Modern Art. Oder aber sie wird selbst konzipiert – und dann regelmäßig von Frankfurt aus auf Welttournee geschickt.

The Schirn is known worldwide for its blockbuster exhibitions, which attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to Frankfurt. The Kunsthalle is constantly putting together new exhibitions that either focus on individual artists or sometimes show the oeuvre of a particular period or art movement - be it the art that emerged in Paris around 1900 or the work of the Impressionists, for example. This was precisely the aim when the Schirn opened in 1986 in the heart of Frankfurt's city center, near the Römer: To bring major exhibitions from international museums to Frankfurt. Now, 40 years after it was founded, the main building is being renovated - and Bockenheim is becoming the city's new art hotspot. With the construction of the former Dondorf printing works, the Schirn has moved into interim quarters that give its exhibitions an additional dose of industrial charm. The move back to the Römer is planned for 2027. Incidentally, the Schirn does not have its own collection; each exhibition either comes from institutions such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Tate Gallery in London or the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Or they are conceived in-house - and then regularly sent on a world tour from Frankfurt.
