Goethe, Wagner, Bettina von Arnim and the Brothers Grimm: in this museum, you can get closer to the Romantics than anywhere else. Romanticism can be many things: a feeling, an attitude, a style. This makes it all the more difficult and exciting to dedicate an entire museum to Romanticism - and the first in the world at that. The location is already groundbreaking: the Romanticism Museum is located right next to the Goethe House. But the museum organisers have also accomplished their task with flying colours. Visitors can explore and discover at 35 stations. One of the highlights of the museum is the large "interactive map" on the second floor of the permanent exhibition. Here you can follow the paths of the most important German Romantics, find out who met whom and how their biographies developed. In addition to Goethe, who quickly left his hometown of Frankfurt, the pool of Romantic minds includes Heinrich Heine, the Brothers Grimm, Joseph von Eichendorff, as well as Bettina von Arnim and Dorothea Schlegel, whose lives can sometimes be traced back to the exact day. This map makes it clear that the German Romantics were not only travellers and seekers, they also had their favourite places - and Frankfurt was one of them.

Romantik kann vieles sein: ein Gefühl, eine Geisteshaltung, eine Stilrichtung. Umso schwieriger und spannender ist es, der Romantik ein ganzes Museum zu widmen – noch dazu das erste weltweit. Der Ort ist schon mal wegweisend: Das Romantik-Museum liegt direkt neben dem Goethe-Haus. Aber auch sonst haben die Museumsmacher*innen ihre Aufgabe mit Bravour gelöst. An 35 Stationen können Gäste hier forschen und entdecken. Ein Höhepunkt des Hauses ist die große „interaktive Landkarte“ im zweiten Stock der Dauerausstellung. Du kannst hier den wichtigsten deutschen Romantiker*innen auf ihren Wegen folgen, kannst nachvollziehen, wer wem begegnet ist und wie sich Biografien entwickelt haben. Neben Goethe, der seine Heimatstadt Frankfurt schnell verließ, zählen Heinrich Heine, die Brüder Grimm, Joseph von Eichendorff, aber auch Bettina von Arnim und Dorothea Schlegel zum Pool der romantischen Köpfe, deren Leben teils tagesgenau zurückverfolgt werden können. Spätestens an dieser Karte wird klar: Die deutschen Romantiker*innen waren nicht nur Reisende und Suchende, sie hatten auch ihre Lieblingsorte – und Frankfurt war einer davon.
