Once upon a time there was an abandoned oil port on the Main - what begins like this is not a fairy tale, but a success story in Offenbach's urban planning. The area of around 26 hectares around the former industrial port was redeveloped from 2011: as a district for living, working, relaxing and going out right by the river. The center of the new quarter is the harbor square - for many Offenbach residents, it is the perfect meeting place to chill out at sunset on the spacious harbor steps, to eat and drink in the restaurants, cafés and bars or to take a walk along the promenade. Lots of greenery, over 2.6 kilometers of walking paths around the harbour island and a clear commitment to sustainable construction not only make the district a showcase project in terms of urban development, they have also shown the people of Offenbach a whole new side to their city. For around 100 years, the harbor was more of a barrier to the water than an access point. That is over, Offenbach has opened up to the river.

Es war einmal ein aufgegebener Ölhafen am Main – was so beginnt, ist kein Märchen, sondern eine Erfolgsgeschichte in der Offenbacher Stadtplanung. Das rund 26 Hektar große Areal um den einstigen Industriehafen wurde ab 2011 neu entwickelt: als Viertel zum Wohnen, Arbeiten, Erholen und Ausgehen direkt am Fluss. Zentrum des neuen Quartiers ist der Hafenplatz – für viele Offenbacher:innen ist er der perfekte Treffpunkt zum Chillen bei Sonnenuntergang an der großzügigen Hafentreppe, zum Essen und Trinken in den Restaurants, Cafés und Bars oder zum Spazierengehen an der Promenade. Viel Grün, über 2,6 Kilometer Spazierwege rund um die Hafeninsel und das klare Bekenntnis zum nachhaltigen Bauen machen das Viertel nicht nur städtebaulich zu einem Vorzeigeprojekt, sie haben den Offenbacher*innen auch eine ganz neue Seite ihrer Stadt gezeigt. Denn: Rund 100 Jahre war der Hafen eher Absperrung vom als Zugang zum Wasser. Das ist vorbei, Offenbach hat sich zum Fluss geöffnet.
