Es passt gut, dass die Stadt Offenbach ihre eigene Geschichte ausgerechnet in einem Fabrikbau erzählt. Im denkmalgeschützten Bernardbau wurde bis in die 1950er Jahre Schnupftabak produziert – neben Leder war Tabak einer der Industriezweige, die Offenbach geprägt haben. Das holzgetäfelte Direktorenzimmer im Erker ist heute Leseraum des Stadtarchivs, das im gleichen Gebäude zu Hause ist. Die Exponate der Schausammlung dokumentieren über 10.000 Jahre Geschichte, ein Highlight ist das Wagengrab aus Offenbach-Rumpenheim: Ein keltischer Fürst wurde dort etwa um 500 v. Chr. bestattet – samt vierrädrigen Wagen, der ihm den Weg ins Jenseits erleichtern sollte. Einen ganz besonderen Einblick in das Leben des 18. Jahrhunderts zeigt das d'Orvillesche Puppenhaus von 1757. Kurz vor ihrem Tod 1935 hatte sich die Offenbacherin Emilie Krafft an das prächtige Spielzeug auf ihrem Dachboden erinnert und es dem damaligen Heimatmuseum überlassen. Kunst aus Offenbach ist der rückwärtige Teil des Fabrikbaus gewidmet, die grafische Sammlung der Stadt zeigt Werke von Offenbacher Künstler*innen – mit Fokus auf Kunst der Moderne, außerdem finden in der sorgfältig restaurierten Industriehalle regelmäßig wechselnde Ausstellungen statt.

It is fitting that the city of Offenbach tells its own story in a factory building of all places. Snuff was produced in the listed Bernardbau until the 1950s - along with leather, tobacco was one of the industries that shaped Offenbach. The wood-paneled director's room in the bay window is now the reading room of the city archive, which is housed in the same building. The exhibits in the display collection document over 10,000 years of history, one highlight being the chariot grave from Offenbach-Rumpenheim: a Celtic prince was buried there around 500 BC - along with a four-wheeled chariot to help him on his way to the afterlife. The d'Orville doll's house from 1757 provides a very special insight into life in the 18th century. Shortly before her death in 1935, Offenbach resident Emilie Krafft remembered the magnificent toy in her attic and donated it to the local history museum. The rear part of the factory building is dedicated to art from Offenbach, the city's graphic art collection shows works by Offenbach artists - with a focus on modern art, and the carefully restored industrial hall also regularly hosts changing exhibitions.
