St. Michael's Chapel is its official name, but the people of Marburg affectionately call it "Michelchen." The small Gothic chapel was consecrated in 1270 – so even before the Elisabeth Church (1283). The builder was also the Teutonic Order. It is presumed that the desire to establish the pilgrim cemetery outside the large construction site of the Elisabeth Church and the order buildings played an important role. From 1530 onwards, Marburg citizens were also buried here. The last burial took place in 1888, and the oldest surviving gravestone dates back to 1566. The St. Michael's Chapel is not open for visitor traffic. However, interested parties can visit the old cemetery at any time – today it is a small park with a special atmosphere.
St. Michaelskapelle heißt sie offiziell, aber die Marburger nennen sie nur liebevoll "Michelchen". Die kleine gotische Kapelle wurde 1270 geweiht – also noch vor der Elisabethkirche (1283). Bauherr war auch hier der Deutsche Orden. Vermutlich spielte der Wunsch eine wichtige Rolle, den Pilgerfriedhof außerhalb der großen Baustelle der Elisabethkirche und der Ordensgebäude anzulegen. Ab 1530 wurden auch Marburger Bürgerinnen und Bürger hier beigesetzt. Die letzte Beisetzung fand 1888 statt, der älteste noch erhaltene Grabstein stammt aus dem Jahr 1566. Die St. Michaelskapelle ist nicht für den Besucherverkehr geöffnet. Interessierte können aber jederzeit den alten Friedhof besuchen – heute ist er ein kleiner Park mit besonderer Atmosphäre.
