Die Texanerin Tess Wiley nannte ihr drittes Studioalbum von 2007 einst „Superfast Rock’n’Roll Played Slow“, was wohl heute noch eine Auszeichnung für einen der kreativsten Albumtitel aller Zeiten verdient hätte, jedoch freilich mehr über ihre augenzwinkernde Herangehensweise aussagt als über die Musik selbst. In dieser kann man die Weite ihres Heimatlandes direkt spüren. So könnte die Musik klingen, die Willie Nelson auf der Veranda seiner Farm hört, während hinter den texanischen Hügelketten im Westen blutorangenrot die Sonne untergeht. Die musikalische Heimat von Tess Wiley liegt irgendwo zwischen Folk und Country – mitten im Americana. Das Singer/Songwritertum wurde Tess als Tochter eines Grammy-prämierten Musikers und einer Schriftstellerin quasi in die Wiege gelegt, obgleich das erste musikalische Vorbild ihrer Kindheit Slash war, bevor sie sich ruhigeren Klängen zuwandte. Sie studierte klassisches Piano in Houston und war Mitte der Neunziger Jahre als Gitarristin Bandmitglied von Sixpence None the Richer. Auf einer Europatour mit dieser Band lernte Tess dabei ihren deutschen, zukünftigen Ex-Mann kennen und wurde in Gießen sesshaft, wo sie heute noch lebt. Ihre Musik ist natürlich weiterhin tief in der amerikanischen Singer/Songwriter-Tradition verwurzelt und bewegt sich irgendwo zwischen einer ausnahmsweise mal nicht depressiven Jolie Holland, Sheryl Crow und Aimee Mann. Ihre jüngste Veröffentlichung „Femme Sole“ ist die packende EP einer gereiften, unabhängigen und vielseitigen Musikerin, die stilistisch irgendwo zwischen Singer-Songwriter, Folk, Pop und Country anzusiedeln ist. „Femme Sole“ ist ein kleines Album ohne Blabla, direkt auf den Punkt. Es zeugt von großer Musikalität, von Reife und Sensibilität, die man selten zu hören bekommt. In this, one can directly feel the vastness of her homeland. This is what the music might sound like that Willie Nelson hears on the porch of his farm while the blood-orange sun sets behind the Texas hill ranges in the west. Tess Wiley's musical home lies somewhere between folk and country – right in the heart of Americana. The singer/songwriter vocation was practically given to Tess as the daughter of a Grammy-winning musician and a writer, although her first musical role model in childhood was Slash, before she turned to quieter sounds. She studied classical piano in Houston and was a guitarist and band member of Sixpence None the Richer in the mid-1990s. On a European tour with this band, Tess met her German, future ex-husband, and settled in Giessen, where she still lives today. Her music is naturally still deeply rooted in the American singer/songwriter tradition and moves somewhere between an unusually non-depressive Jolie Holland, Sheryl Crow, and Aimee Mann.
