Jahrhunderts: Aldous Huxleys „Brave New World / Schöne neue Welt“. „BRAVE NEW WORLD“ ist Inszenierung #no19. The Play In their new production, the theater group of Elisabethschule dedicates itself to one of the great dystopian classics of the 20th century: Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World." The students have developed an independent stage adaptation from the novel and translated the material into the present. The theater group demonstrates with "Brave New World" how disturbingly relevant Huxley's vision still is. We enter, as in the original, a future where stability and consumption reign supreme. People are bred in hatcheries, sorted into castes, and conditioned to align with the seemingly perfect system. Emotions are seen as a danger, knowledge as a risk, and individuality as a disturbance. To ensure no one strays from the path, there are soma pills offering happiness in chemical form, guaranteeing smiling faces. However, the encounter with the inhabitants of the "Outer Zone" shakes the order and confronts the characters with questions about freedom and meaning. The Staging The stage adaptation by Elisabethschule of Brave New World (after Aldous Huxley, 1932) further develops Huxley's vision: In a world shaped by climate change and largely destroyed, human life is only possible under comprehensive control. Stability, order, and apparent happiness become prerequisites for mere survival. The stage is deliberately kept simple and reflects in its clarity the sterile, highly organized world of the World State. A central design element of the staging is the contrast between the new, controlled world and the wild, primitive world. In Huxley's original, books are banned because they trigger emotions and thereby threaten the equilibrium of society. We pick up on this thought and shift it: In our version, music is forbidden. It stands for feeling and immediate experience, making it a threat to a system based on control and predictability. While the world of the system sounds electronically and rhythmically organized, the outer zone is characterized by acoustic and unadulterated sounds. Thematically, we raise the question of how much freedom a person is willing to sacrifice for security and a seemingly happy life. We have consciously downplayed the storyline around love and interpersonal relationships to focus more on the mechanisms of a system that directs thinking, behavior, and consumption. The Theater Group of Elisabethschule The production is directed by the theater group of Elisabethschule Marburg under the leadership of Tobias Purtauf. The ensemble consists of students of various age groups who share a common interest in the performing arts. This year, 18 students from grades 11, 12, and 13 are on stage. The theater group aims every year to present a play on a large public stage. Special emphasis is placed on ensuring that all members are involved in the development of the production. Weekly rehearsals also include a three-day rehearsal trip and special rehearsals on weekends. The theater group seeks the path from school to the public. The Waggonhalle Marburg has proven to be a good and long-established venue for the performances. By now, the theater group can look back on a very long history of productions. "BRAVE NEW WORLD" is staging #no19. The theater group places great value on diverse productions and a wide repertoire. They perform both classic plays and contemporary works and are always looking for new approaches to theater. Various genres such as drama, comedy, and tragedy are covered. Recent successful productions include the stagings The Kangaroo Chronicles (2025), The Wave (2024), The Visit of the Old Lady (2023), The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared (2022), Nothing (2021), Hero's Summer (2020), An Odyssey (2019), and The Saint Joanna of the Slaughterhouses (2018).
