St Michael’s Church in Fulda is one of the oldest churches in Germany. It was built between 820 and 822 as the sepulture church for Fulda Abbey on the orders of Abbot Eigil and his successor Rabanus Maurus. It has been destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. The crypt from the original building has been preserved. It is presumed that the original church was a single-storey building with a conical roof, a recess to the eastern side, and the crypt. The vaulted crypt features a central column and is almost entirely unchanged. The main floor was a central structure, similar to that which stands today. Romanesque-style cruciform design Following the destruction of the original church, except for the crypt, the church was later rebuilt in its former shape. The circular building’s eight pillars – known as the rotunda – are particularly eye-catching. The number 8 is used to symbolically refer to eternity, while the circular shape of the building also points to the everlasting. In the 11th century, the rotunda was increased in height and the nave and tower, which still exist to this day, were added. The smaller extensions to the north and south of the church then resulted in a Romanesque, cruciform building. The former cemetery chapel became the church of the adjacent cloister – the Propstei Michaelsberg. At the beginning of the 18th century, the church interior was remodelled in the baroque style and the Rochus chapel was added. Nowadays, St Michael’s Church is also used for baptisms and weddings. But its main function remains as the private chapel for the Bishop of Fulda. 1,200 years: Old – Eternal – New In 2022, St Michael’s Church celebrated its 1,200th anniversary. In line with the slogan Old – Eternal – New, the anniversary year was marked with lots of church services, tours and special events. Old, because the church is a constant and reliable presence. Eternal, because it is unostentatious, simple and beautiful. New, because St Michael’s Church is both surprising and comforting. Die Fuldaer Michaelskirche gilt als eine der ältesten Kirchen Deutschlands. Zwischen 820 und 822 wurde die Michaelskirche von Abt Eigil und dessen Nachfolger Rabanus Maurus als Begräbniskirche des Klosters Fulda errichtet. Durch die Jahrhunderte wurde sie mehrfach zerstört und umgebaut. Vom ursprünglichen Bau ist noch die Krypta erhalten. Der Ursprungsbau war vermutlich ein eingeschossiger Rundbau mit Kegeldach, östlichem Nischenanbau und Krypta. Die Krypta mit ihrem Gewölbe und der Säule in der Mitte ist bis heute fast unverändert erhalten geblieben. Das Hauptgeschoss war – ähnlich wie heute – ein Zentralbau. Kreuzförmige Anlage im Stil der Romanik Nach der Zerstörung der Kirche mit Ausnahme der Krypta wurde das Gotteshaus wenig später in den alten Formen neu errichtet. Auffällig sind die acht Säulen des Rundbaus, der sogenannten Rotunde. Die Zahl 8 verweist in der Zahlensymbolik auf die Ewigkeit, ebenso steht die Kreisform des Rundbaus für die Unendlichkeit. Im 11. Jahrhundert wurde die Rotunde erhöht und das heutige Langhaus mit dem Turm angebaut. Durch kleinere Anbauten im Norden und Süden entstand eine kreuzförmige romanische Anlage. Die einstige Friedhofskapelle wurde zur Kirche des Nebenklosters – der Propstei Michaelsberg. Zu Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts wurde das Kircheninnere barockisiert und die Rochuskapelle angebaut. Heute wird die Michaelskirche auch für Taufen und Trauungen genutzt. In erster Linie dient sie aber als Privatkapelle des Fuldaer Bischofs. 1200 Jahre Alt – Ewig - Neu Im Jahr 2022 feierte die Michaelskirche ihren 1200. Geburtstag. Unter dem Slogan Alt – Ewig – Neu gab es im Jubiläumsjahr zahlreiche Gottesdienste, Führungen und Veranstaltungen. Alt, weil die Kirche fest und verlässlich ist. Ewig, weil sie schlicht, einfach und schön ist. Neu, weil die Michaelskirche zugleich überraschend und berührend ist.
