Archaeological Hiking Trail The archaeological hiking trail at the Milseburg provides information about daily life in a town-like Celtic settlement and leads to the most beautiful places and viewpoints on the highest mountain of the Kuppenrhön. The Milseburg is considered the most beautiful mountain in the region. Difficulty: easy Duration: 01:20 hours Length: 4.25 km Ascent: 230 m Descent: 230 m From the Milseburg parking lot to the edge of the forest on the northern slope of the Milseburg peak. Follow the black wedge marking straight into the forest, passing the overview board and the memorial stone for Professor Joseph Vonderau. Staying on the wide main path, pass sign 1 "Fortification of the Kälberhutstone" and thus through the former north gate of the Celtic fortress, which blocked the passage between the Kälberhutstone to the left and the Bonifatius rock to the right. Continue up to sign 2 "Homes of the Nobles." Now turn right and leave the main path. Past the Gangolfs spring back to the main path. Continue uphill and pass sign 4 "Sacred District" to the intersection below the Milseburghütte, one of the most popular huts in the Rhön. Head up to the Milseburghütte and pass the Gangolf chapel on the summit with the baroque crucifixion group. Return to the intersection and go right downhill, following the red angle marking towards the peak. The path takes a sharp right turn at a bench. Passing the Mary Grotto and a left turn, head to the overview board at the edge of the forest on the eastern slope. Here, go right onto a path. To the rest area at sign 5 "Gänseborn" and further to sign 6 "South Gate III." Here, turn left and cross the rampart, which once protected the settlement. At the next fork, turn left again and follow the wall in the opposite direction. Cross the path leading to the overview board at the edge of the forest at sign 7 "Farming in the La Tène Period." Attention! About 10 m before the sharp right curve, turn left onto a path. Again cross the wall, immediately to the left and pass sign 8 "East Gate" on the familiar path back to the overview board at the edge of the forest. Now turn right, along the edge of the forest and pass sign 9 "Cattle Breeding in the La Tène Period" and sign 10 "Village Life" to the overview board on the northern slope of the mountain and return along the familiar path to the Milseburg parking lot.
