Diese vier Grundelemente prägen als Urkräfte die Natur und unsere Welt. Lange Zeit dienten sie dazu, die Welt zu erklären. So schrieb vor etwa 900 Jahren die Benediktinerin Hildegard von Bingen:
„Im Menschen sind Feuer, Luft, Wasser und Erde, und aus ihnen besteht er. Vom Feuer hat er die Wärme, von der Luft den Atem, vom Wasser das Blut und von der Erde den Körper. Dem Feuer verdankt er das Sehen, der Luft das Hören, dem Was-
ser die Bewegung und der Erde seinen Gang.“ Auch wenn die moderne Naturwissenschaft diese Auffassung überholt hat, sind
doch die Grundfragen geblieben: Woraus besteht die Welt? Gibt es etwas Ewiges? Ein Stoff, der allem zugrunde liegt? Ein Prinzip, das alles formt und durchwebt? Welche Rolle spielt darin der Mensch? In der Bibel sind die vier Elemente zentrale Symbole für die Schöpfung. In ihnen zeigt sich Gott: Im Feuerschein und in einer Wolkensäule, im Beben der Erde und als
lebensspendende Quelle. In unserer Sommer-Predigtreihe gehen wir den verschiedenen Kräften in der Bibel nach und fragen, was sie für unseren Glauben bedeuten.

These four fundamental elements shape nature and our world as primal forces. For a long time, they served to explain the world. About 900 years ago, the Benedictine Hildegard of Bingen wrote:
“In humans, there are fire, air, water, and earth, and from these, they are composed. From fire, they have warmth; from air, the breath; from water, the blood; and from earth, the body. They owe the ability to see to fire, to air the ability to hear, to water the ability to move, and to earth their gait.” Although modern natural science has outgrown this view, the fundamental questions remain:
What is the world made of? Is there something eternal? A substance that underlies everything? A principle that shapes and permeates all? What role does humanity play in this? In the Bible, the four elements are central symbols for creation. God is revealed in them: in the glow of fire and in a pillar of cloud, in the trembling of the earth and as
a life-giving source. In our summer sermon series, we will explore the different forces in the Bible and ask what they mean for our faith.
