Our St Elisabeth also had a hand in this: Her daughter, Sophie of Brabant, granted the patronage of the parish church to the Teutonic Order in Marburg in her function as Landgravine in 1250, and from 1363 to 1809, the old and the newly built current St Martin's Church belonged to the Teutonic Order. Today you can see a baroque hall church with a Gothic defence tower. And yes, you guessed it, today's church tower actually served to protect the population. The area around the church was fortified, and numerous key embrasures are still clearly recognisable. And on the southern side, two moats made it difficult to storm.
